Is Our Social Media Behavior Destroying Our Society?

Remember when life was simple back in the day? We used to have more family time and we went out smelled the fresh air. We used to come up with ways to occupy ourselves with doing arts, crafts, playing board games, creating our own games. In the past, people used to do so much together and communicate by looking at each other. Life was simple, and togetherness was a vital part of our life. We used to get together more.

In over a decade or more, the internet has taken people by storm. It has become part of our lives. Something we call social media. Now, here is a question that I need to ask. Is social media destroying our society? Nowadays, there is an app for everything. So many different things get created to keep smart phone, computer users entertained endlessly. A lot of people are now more interested in what they see on their screen devices, tablets and computers rather than looking up and spending time with your life.

A lot of satire, fake news, and false information is being spread back and forth and there are those who believe in everything they read and absorb that information they do read and then something false gets spread around and then finding out it’s a hoax and not the real deal. The internet has become a very messed up place. It is a fun place to be, don’t get me wrong. There is so many things you can do to pass time and to interact with friends and family, but don’t let social media consume you.

Now, in my opinion as a social media professional, as a writer and my point of view to answer this question, Yes I think social media is destroying our society and it is getting worse. I’ve seen a lot of things going on where jealousy strikes, where memes are made about everything to make fun, to make jokes about.

Not everything is a joke. There are serious things that happen in the news and there are people who are ahead of the rest and make very ridiculous and terrible memes, Photoshop, alter pictures, dub videos and poke fun at things that are not supposed to be funny. Some people have a lot of time on their hands to do things like that. People have gotten so carried away just so that they can get their 15 minutes of fame.

Now, there are those people who post really incredibly ridiculous, unnecessary videos of themselves doing really crazy and stupid things just to gain popularity, just to get their nonsense out there just so they can be famous no matter what it is. People will do anything and everything now because of how easy it is to get out there with social media present. They don’t realize how quickly things can go viral. People do not know consequences of their actions. Some people get so influenced by these things especially teenagers and then they do the same thing. It doesn’t matter if trouble arises. There will be people who will do anything at any cost. –

They even get paid for nonsense. It is really sad that people have come this far. Viral, trends, trending, and people will do it all. Instead of doing good things, setting a great example and doing things to better this society and our world, it’s getting worse. People nowadays strive for attention, they are hungry to get noticed.

It really is a mess out there in the internet world. All these social media outlets and information that is out there these days is hard to believe what is real and what is fake. There is information that is misleading and its unfortunate that people need to resort to creating stupidity.

So many people are so into screen time. It is like a sickness and cannot be cured. In this society and culture, screen time is in our veins now, its like a drug that we need in our day-to-day lives. If we are not taking screen time everyday, its like a missed dose and people go absolutely crazy.

In this society that is so vulnerable, the world communication is very strong, but we are vulnerable, we feel that we cannot control our habits in constantly communicating with the world no matter what it is. We feel like we always need to do it to feel satisfied.

Some people do not even know how to verbally talk anymore, our behavior around others are becoming terrible, the art of getting together, our manners, and socially adapt to society is becoming slim to none. People do not even have to leave their homes anymore to do shopping and go out of the house to see the world anymore because people do online shopping now, people resort to apps to deliver parcels and things to their home.

We are all being monitored 24/7 365 days a year. Nothing is private anymore, our lives are constantly being watched and its very unfortunate on how we have come to this point in this generation and this life we live in.

This is a very serious problem and simple things are not so simple anymore. People are behaving badly. It is evident. I seldom take public transit, but I do see people buried into their phones, I see people not knowing how to adapt to society and to behave. People get triggered by something that is not a big deal, people start to get agitated and uncomfortable with their surroundings because they do not know how to act, they don’t know how to interact with others.

Everything is constantly communicated through screens, texting, and more. People text and drive now, they text and look at their screens while walking through intersections and not even watching where they go, people take selfies and pictures at dangerous places and then they either get killed or they get badly injured. Distracted driving has taken a huge role in this society as well and many governments, cities and countries have strict laws into texting and driving. Do not text and drive and put yourself and anyone else in danger. Things on screens can wait. Driving and concentrating should be a priority.

Social Media is a powerful tool now. Yes, there are advantages to social media too. I am not saying that it is all bad in its entirety, but there are ways that it can be great, positive, and something that can inspire people. Unless social media is used in a necessary way to think before we post something, then by all means do it. We just need to find balance in our lives. The internet is never going to go away. It will always be there now. We just need to focus on prioritizing our lives, make it more fun and enjoyable without always tuning into social media and posting every single thing you do in your life.

There are things that are meant to be private. Not everything should be posted for the world’s eye to see.

We definitely need to get out more in society, to learn how to behave properly like how we used to back in the day before the millennial generation came around. I miss these simplistic years where things used to be so different.

Lets take care of each other, watch out for each other and make the internet a great place to learn from each other in good ways, spread good things and make peace with inspiring and beautiful messages. Our world of people are in dire need for goodness. We can all get along, its just some influences and bad behavior gets us sometimes. We should never let that affect us.

All the best. Now here are some questions for you.

What do you think about social media?

What do you like to see changed about it?

What is social media to you?
